Aston Lodge Primary School

Curriculum

What drives our curriculum?

We passionately believe that to develop every child to fully meet their potential we must offer a broad and balanced curriculum.  This should embrace learning across all subjects, whilst developing children’s life skills - including their spiritual, moral and cultural development - so that each child can use their learning effectively and successfully.  We are very proud of the curriculum we have designed for our pupils at Aston Lodge Primary School.

Excellence and Enjoyment drive our curriculum as we believe that motivated learners are the most successful.

Seeking children’s special talents is a real passion of ours.  Therefore opportunities for performance and competition in sport and creative pursuits are built into our curriculum planning.

Long Term Planning 2014-2015

We follow the National Curriculum for England which outlines programmes of study for the following subjects:

Core subjects

English, Mathematics and Science

Foundation Subjects

Art & Design, Computing, Design & Technology, Geography, History, Music, Languages (KS2) and Physical Education

This is reflected in our long term planning cycle, which is a two year cycle for each phase in primary school (Foundation Stage 2, Key Stage 1, Lower Key Stage 2, Upper Key Stage 2).  It allows us to work as teams to create exciting topics geared towards the pupils interests and through this we can make the learning meaningful and relevant.

We follow the Rotherham syllabus for Religious Education.

An annual programme of performance opportunities is planned so that every child will take part in at least one musical and acting performance each academic year.

Swimming lessons for pupils from Year 2 upwards, in our own pool, are also planned to ensure that all children leave Aston Lodge Primary School competent and confident in the water.

Art and Craft exhibitions are planned annually.

We enter local competitions for tag-rugby, football, athletics, gymnastics, cricket and dance regularly, ensuring that pupils who show ability in these areas have the opportunity to compete.

Medium Term Planning

This reflects our vehicles for learning and the breadth and depth of study.  Life skills are addressed and taught to encourage pupils to use their learning.  It consists of blocks of teaching, centred around an exciting and stimulating topic, for example "Spies and Espionage", "Superheroes" and "Myths and Monsters".  Through  this, learning of knowledge and skills across a number of subjects is taught.

Each block shows opportunities for using and exploring a variety of life skills, cross curricular skills, deeply embedding knowledge and for display and performance.  Topics will vary in lengths of time to continually stimulate and motivate the children.

Information about these can be found on the page for each year group.

Short Term Planning

This is generally a one/two week plan showing the time-table and intended learning.  It is very much a working document driven by evaluation and assessment of learning.
